{"id":2154,"date":"2020-07-06T09:40:28","date_gmt":"2020-07-06T09:40:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/?page_id=2154"},"modified":"2026-01-16T03:22:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T03:22:08","slug":"trouble-shooting","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/trouble-shooting\/","title":{"rendered":"Trouble-shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>#1 &#8211; <strong>First, update your system and app, and backup your data ..<\/strong><br>&#8211; run the &#8216;<strong>Settings<\/strong>&#8216; app, search for &#8216;updates&#8217;, tap &#8216;<strong>System update<\/strong>&#8216; or &#8216;<strong>Software update<\/strong>&#8216; and apply an update if one is available<br>&#8211; tap the &#8216;<strong>Android\/Apple install\/update app<\/strong>&#8216; button at <a href=\"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\">https:\/\/trilobite.solutions<\/a> and update the app if applicable<br>&#8211; backup your trails &amp; locations &#8211; see <a href=\"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/backups\/\">https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/backups\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#2 &#8211; <strong>App is laggy, unresponsive<\/strong><br>There are 2 possible causes ..<br>1. <strong>Too many trails<\/strong><br> &#8211; delete any trails<strong> that you don&#8217;t need<\/strong><br> &#8211; remove trails from any <strong>areas<\/strong> that you won&#8217;t working soon<br>      &#8211; <strong>backup the trails<\/strong> for the<strong> area<\/strong> to a .csv file<br>      &#8211; then <strong>delete<\/strong> the trails in that <strong>area<\/strong><br>        (You can later <strong>restore<\/strong> them from that .csv file when you want them again)<br> &#8211; reduce the number of trails that show <strong>walking vs driving<\/strong> &#8211; the multi-colouring of trails can have a large impact on performance<br>2. <strong>Plotting too many features<\/strong> of a data layer<br> &#8211; <strong>zoom in<\/strong> further and then plot only the trails in the <strong>current map view<\/strong><br>As a last resort ..<br> &#8211; <strong>reinstall the app<\/strong>, but backup your trails &amp; locations first &#8211; see <a href=\"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/backups\/\">https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/backups\/<\/a> &#8211; and <strong>import<\/strong> them after the reinstall<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> #3 &#8211; <strong>Charged twice for a subscription<\/strong><br>&#8211; this can only happen if you have <strong>multiple<\/strong> Google accounts or Apple IDs<br>&#8211; on each device, tap the MENU icon (3 bars) then tap &#8216;<strong>Manage subscriptions<\/strong>&#8216;<br>&#8211; note carefully which subscriptions you have purchased<br>&#8211; all app users require the <strong>App<\/strong> subscription <br>&#8211; see <a href=\"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/subscriptions\/\">Manage subscriptions<\/a> for more information<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#4 &#8211; <strong>GPS &#8211; ie. tracking &#8211; problems<\/strong><br>When recording your trail, your phone should be receiving a GPS location every 5-10 seconds. If you are producing a trail with <strong>long straight lines<\/strong>, then you are not getting all these updates. You might only be getting GPS updates when your phone&#8217;s screen is not blank.  Check that your location settings are correct (see below) and that your phone has a <strong>clear view of the sky<\/strong>, for example do not sit in your vehicle with your phone in your trouser pocket.  Also, stop the track recording <strong>whenever you stop for a long time<\/strong> &#8211; eg. lunch, at the end of the working day &#8211; to stop the accumulation of noise.<br><strong>Solutions:<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>restart<\/strong> your phone or tablet, if you haven&#8217;t already<br>&#8211; if you get straight lines when driving, <strong>put your device on the dashboard<\/strong><br><strong><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Apple devices:<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><br><strong>Upgrade the app to version 2.4.3 or newer<\/strong>, if you still have a problem then ..<br>&#8211; <strong>WiFi-only<\/strong> <em>iPads<\/em> do not have GPS hardware so will not locate you in remote areas. You can connect a <strong>Garmin Glo 2 GPS<\/strong> as a get-around &#8211; this has worked well for a Trilobite customer.<br>&#8211; run the &#8216;<strong>Settings<\/strong>&#8216; app and check that the Trilobite app has access to your location <strong>ALWAYS<\/strong>, and <strong>PRECISE<\/strong> location is enabled.<br>&#8211; <strong>do not set &#8216;Apple satellite&#8217;<\/strong> as your base map when in the field<br><strong><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Android phones\/tablets:<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><br>&#8211; run the &#8216;<strong>Settings<\/strong>&#8216; app and check that the Trilobite app has access to your location<br>&#8211; with some phones, run the &#8216;<strong>Settings<\/strong>&#8216; app, and tap &#8216;<strong>Location<\/strong>&#8216; &#8211; there may be a <strong>battery-saving setting<\/strong> that prevents the GPS being used. Ensure that this is <strong>NOT<\/strong> set.<br>&#8211; &nbsp;in the &#8216;<strong>Settings<\/strong>&#8216; app, tap &#8216;<strong>Location<\/strong>&#8216;, then &#8216;<strong>Location mode<\/strong>&#8216; and turn on <strong>GPS device ONLY<\/strong>&nbsp;(seen on a ZTE\/Telstra phone)<br>&#8211; install the &#8216;<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&amp;hl=en_AU\">GPS status &amp; toolbox<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;<\/em> app, then run the app while outside to check that your GPS is connecting to multiple satellites. See video #9 at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/videos\/\">https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/videos\/<\/a> for help with using this app<br><strong><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">All devices:<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><br><strong>Two general tests:<\/strong><br>If nothing above helps, run 2 simple tests <strong>before you go into the field<\/strong> &#8211;<br>1. when you go for a drive, put your phone <strong>on the dashboard<\/strong> of your car (so it has good visibility of the sky), and record your track.<br>2. record your track while walking and <strong>holding the phone in front of your chest<\/strong> (so it has good visibility of the sky)<br>&#8211; you can also repeat the tests above when you arrive in the field<br>&#8211; as a last resort <strong>reinstall the app<\/strong>, but backup your trails &amp; locations first &#8211; see <a href=\"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/backups\/\">https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/backups\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#5 &#8211; <strong>Problem with using &#8216;Satellite imagery&#8217; layer<\/strong><br>&#8211; &#8216;satellite imagery&#8217; is an internet feed &#8211;<strong> not guaranteed<\/strong> <strong>to work<\/strong> in the field<br>&#8211; in the app&#8217;s menu (icon with 3 bars), choose to &#8216;<strong>Download satellite imagery<\/strong>&#8216; and set this as your base map when you are in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#6 &#8211; <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">iPhone\/iPad<\/mark> cannot connect to the internet<\/strong><br>&#8211; &#8216;Manage downloads&#8217; displays &#8216;<strong>List not available &#8211; do you have an internet connection?<\/strong>&#8216;<br>&#8211; first check that other apps can connect to the internet &#8211; if so go to the next step<br>&#8211; in the &#8216;<strong>Settings<\/strong>&#8216; app, tap &#8216;<strong>Mobile<\/strong>&#8216; and check that the Trilobite app is enabled<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#7 &#8211; <strong>Problems downloading maps, generally<\/strong><br>&#8211; restart your phone<br>&#8211; do a <strong>search<\/strong> on your phone (eg. &#8216;fossils&#8217;) to ensure that you have an internet connection &#8211; check that <strong>photos<\/strong> appear in the results as well as text<br>&#8211; check that you have sufficient available <strong>storage space<\/strong> on your device<br>&#8211; download a <strong>small<\/strong> map &#8211; eg. &#8216;TAS resources&#8217;. If OK, try larger maps.<br>&#8211; if <strong>failing with WIFI<\/strong> &#8211; switch off WIFI and try downloading using your <strong>mobile data<\/strong><br>&#8211; if <strong>failing with mobile data<\/strong> &#8211; switch off mobile data and connect to <strong>WIFI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#8 &#8211; <strong>You have a new email address &#8211; do you need to create a new Apple ID \/ Google account?<\/strong><br>No, you don&#8217;t need to, and having multiple accounts creates problems with subscriptions.
