The Macbook does not have<strong> GPS<\/strong> hardware or an <strong>internal compass<\/strong>, so is <strong><span style=\"color: red;\">not a field device<\/span><\/strong>, but you can use it in the home, office or base camp, if you like the bigger screen and a <strong>physical<\/strong> <strong>keyboard<\/strong>.&nbsp; If you have an iPhone or iPad, and use the <strong>same Apple ID<\/strong> on your Macbook, the app will use the App Store subscriptions that you have already bought. The Macbook <strong>interacts fine<\/strong> <strong>with Android devices<\/strong>, but if this is your hardware mix, you need to purchase a separate <strong>App <\/strong>subscription ($11.99\/year) from the App Store, for the Macbook (and any prospector subscriptions if you need the prospector maps on the MacBook).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an aside, a <strong>Macbook Air<\/strong> (or Pro) is required to run <strong>QGIS<\/strong> &#8211; a Neo won&#8217;t be sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Screenshot of Macbook full-screen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SA_Macbook-1024x640.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SA_Macbook-1024x640.png 1024w, https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SA_Macbook-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SA_Macbook-768x480.png 768w, https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SA_Macbook-1536x960.png 1536w, https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SA_Macbook-2048x1280.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Install the Trilobite app from the <strong>iPhone\/iPad<\/strong> App Store &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/au\/app\/australian-geology-travel-maps\/id1361470455\">https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/au\/app\/australian-geology-travel-maps\/id1361470455<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Downloading maps and data layers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use &#8216;<strong>Manage downloads<\/strong>&#8216; in exactly the same way as you do on your iPhone or iPad, when you have a good internet connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importing locations and trails<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Run the <strong>Finder<\/strong> app<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Browse to your <strong>.csv<\/strong> files on your MacBook&#8217;s local drive or USB stick or iCloud Drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right-click the .csv file and click &#8216;<strong>Open with&#8217;<\/strong>, then &#8216;<strong>Other<\/strong> &#8230;&#8217;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable &#8216;<strong>All applications<\/strong>&#8216;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tick &#8216;<strong>Always open with<\/strong>&#8216; if you want to <strong>save time<\/strong> with future .csv imports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double-click &#8216;<strong>Australian Geology Travel Maps.app<\/strong>&#8216;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Trilobite app will then appear, and <strong>report the results of the .csv import<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can do similarly with .kml, <strong>spatialite<\/strong> (.sqlite), .geojson and .<strong>mbtiles<\/strong> files<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transferring data from your phone\/tablet to your Macbook while in a base camp<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the absence of a wifi network, the simplest way to do this is to <strong>backup<\/strong> your <strong>locations or trails<\/strong> to a USB stick &#8211; from an <strong>Android<\/strong> or <strong>Apple<\/strong> device &#8211; (see <a href=\"https:\/\/trilobite.solutions\/maps\/backups\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1657\">backups<\/a>), then insert the USB stick into the MacBook and <strong>import<\/strong> the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exporting locations from your Macbook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot record trails because there is no GPS (explained above), but you can <strong>create marked locations<\/strong> and save this data to a <strong>.csv<\/strong> file. This is via the &#8216;<strong>Backup my locations<\/strong>&#8216; option in the <strong>app menu<\/strong> (icon with 3 horizontal bars).
