Recommended hardware

Apple

All iPhones and iPads of the same age or newer than the iPhone 6 will run the Trilobite Solutions app.

Warning: WIFI-only iPads do not have GPS – therefore cannot determine your location when you are in the field.  You can connect a Garmin Glo 2 GPS as a get-around – this has worked well for a Trilobite customer.

Android

Ensure that your Android phone or tablet has at least 64 GB of storage and at least 4 GB of RAM. Data layers are disabled in the app on Android devices with less than 2 GB RAM because these devices have insufficient hardware resources to plot data layers reliably. Place your finger on ‘trilobite.solutions’ at the bottom of the map view for half a second to show the amount of available RAM on your phone.

Battery-life is particularly important in the field. When updating your phone you can buy a long battery-life phone for a budget price. Phones that are focussed on long battery life will have a large mAh spec, and additionally they may also be geared to use less battery per hour. As a guide, the Oppo A5 is advertised as a long battery-life phone and has a 6000 mAh battery.

Warning: Some Chinese-made Android phones are problematic – eg. ZTE85, ZTE84

There are some tablets that don’t have GPS hardware – this is rare but double-check that any tablet you are considering has GPS hardware – you can test with the GPS status & toolbox app.

Other notes

We recommend that you buy a shockproof gel/silicon/rubber protector for your phone or tablet – easily sourced on eBay.

Note that subscriptions purchased on Android devices cannot be transferred to Apple devices. If you replace an Android phone/tablet with an iPhone/iPad, you need to cancel your Android’s Google Play subscriptions, and buy new Apple’s App Store subscriptions. See https://trilobite.solutions/maps/subscriptions for more details.
